This Newsbrief deals with a numerical system to encode information. The code allocates a value to the position of the digit. Each shift to the left increases value by the factor 3. In terms of the Atlas of Technology the technology is concerned with Processing Information (I).
Technology explorers are on the lookout for better ways of coding information for specialized applications.
Historically it is possible to identify many codes. Three well-known systems are:
  • Morse code
  • Decimal code
  • Binary code
A little known code, the trinary code, is attracting increasing attention. Terminology and definitions have not been fully standardized. The system to be discussed here uses a series of positions. These have the values: 1, 3, 9, 27 and so on, and in practice increase in value from right to left. Three indicators are used to express value, 0, 1 and 2.
The code can be illustrated by using three positions. Thus conventional 1 is written as 001 (i.e., one 1); conventional 2 is written as 002; conventional 3 is written as 010 (i.e., one three); conventional 9 is written as 100; while conventional 26 is written as 222 (i.e., two nines, two threes and two ones.) http://howtodothat.wikidot.com/how-to-use-trinarycode
The code can conveniently be used to represent letters. Every letter in the 26 letter alphabet can be expressed in three digits. This leads to economies with respect to coding when compared to the traditional binary code that requires about twice the number of digits.
