Reformatted from: Van Wyk, Rias J: Technology - A Unifying Code, 2004, SMG, Cape Town, p.34. Based on: Ropohl, Gunter: Eine Systemtheorie der Technik, 1979, Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich and Vienna, p.178.
This Newsbrief focuses on facilities, such as seed vaults, to store genetic material. This represents a concerted effort to preserve genetic diversity. In terms of the Atlas of Technological Megatrends it is concerned with the functionality of information storing
In February 2008 the Norwegian authorities announced the completion of the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Its purpose is to store seed from plants all over the world. Located in the north of Norway, it is constructed in a permanently frozen region to ensure the preservation of its contents.
Examples of earlier initiatives illustrate the extent of the project:
  • COLUMBIA; beans - 31,718 types
  • INDIA; pearl millet - 12,698 types
  • IVORY COAST; rice - 14,917 types
  • MEXICO; maize - 20,411 types
  • NIGERIA; yam - 2,878 types
  • PHILIPPINES; rice - 80,617 types
  • SYRIA; wheat - 30,270 types
(Rosner, Hillary, "The gatherers" Popular Science, January 2008, Vol. 272, No. 1 p. 66.)
Executives should recognize the growing importance of genetic vaults as a conscious step in preserving the life forces of the planet. While technological advance and improved functionality normally contribute to a smaller negative environmental impact, they do result in more homogenous crops and reduced natural diversity. Vaults are a concerted effort to preserve this diversity.
