This Newsbrief focuses on improving communications between humans and machines. It deals with thought-activated technology (TAT). In terms of the Atlas of Technological Megatrends it is concerned with the functionality of information transmission
Improving human-device communication is a constant challenge for technology innovators.
Over the years there has been a progression towards increasingly ethereal linkages. We may differentiate three phases:
  • Hands on technology
  • Voice activated technology
  • Thought-activated technology
Thought-activation has been pursued in laboratories for a long time. Initially this was accomplished through wiring parts of the brain to the device being controlled. More recently procedures have been developed that dispense with material connections, and rely on unconnected sensors to detect brain activity associated with different thought patterns. One example is a process called optical topography, that detects changes in blood flow patterns in the brain. Other approaches are being pursued as well.
Technology executives and investment professionals should note the entry of thought-activated devices in the market place at this time. One example is a television remote control being developed by Hitachi.
The growth in this technology will create a cluster of opportunities. These will include a surge in the neurosciences, an increased need for mind training involving meditative-like procedures, and the creative use of deep brain stimulation technology.
