Agriculture: Food, fiber and fuel
Positioning this technology in the
Functionality Grid
Reformatted from: Van Wyk, Rias J: Technology - A Unifying Code, 2004, SMG, Cape Town, p.34. Based on: Ropohl, Gunter: Eine Systemtheorie der Technik, 1979, Carl Hanser Verlag, Munich and Vienna, p.178.
This Newsbrief focuses on trends in ethanol production from corn, i.e. the production of an energy carrier from an agricultural product. In terms of the Atlas of Technological Megatrends it deals with the functionality of energy processing.
Recent advances in renewable energy in the USA have included an increase in the production of ethanol from corn. We anticipate two developments:
  • A rapid increase in the share of corn being channeled into fuel production
  • A stimulus to agriculture
An estimate of the share of corn used for fuel is given below.
Initially this will cause disruption in the supply of food, and lead to tension between fuel and food producers. Eventually it will boost the demand for agricultural products. In addition to its traditional role of supplying food and fiber, the agricultural sector will add fuel to its range of offerings.
Technology executives and investment professionals should note the potential increase in demand for agricultural inputs. Agricultural bio-tech companies and equipment companies could benefit directly.
